Lock snapping, or "lock bumping", is a method for gaining access to a lock without the key. It involves applying a sequence of carefully controlled blows to the outside of the lock with small, precisely calibrated tools that are usually hand-made by the practitioner. Locks that can be opened by this technique are sometimes referred to as "bump-proof". So far, some specific types have been identified by their manufacturers as being resistant against one type or another form of lock snappers. However, there is no proof that these locks cannot be manipulated in other ways (such as freeze spray). Lock snapping can be used in residential and commercial buildings such as apartments (when the landlord/superintendent does not have a master key), offices, dormitories (when the house manager or owner does not have a master key), and vaults. When mastered by someone with proper knowledge and experience, lock snapping is very quick.
