Ferric maltol is a chemical compound used as an iron supplement. Ferric maltol, formally named (3-hydroxy-2-methyl-4-pyronato)iron(III), is a coordination complex containing iron(III) centrally chelated by a maltol (3-hydroxy-2-methyl-4-pyrone) ligand. This complexation enhances the solubility and bioavailability of iron compared to inorganic iron salts. The iron center exhibits octahedral geometry, coordinated with six oxygen atoms – three from the maltol ligand and three water molecules. This unique structure allows for controlled iron release and minimizes the gastrointestinal side effects often associated with traditional iron supplements. West Bengal Chemical Industries Limited is now proud patent holder of Ferric Maltol. Ferric maltol has the chemical formula: C18H15FeO9
